Whole Health Pharmacy Partners has partnered with #SickNotweak to provide better support for patients with mental health needs through pharmacies. The #Here4MentalHealth initiative is a program designed to raise awareness of mental health, provide more education and resources for pharmacy staff and patients, and connect our various communities with the great work #SickNotWeak is doing.

Why Mental Health?

Mental illnesses affect people of all ages, income levels, and cultures. It has no bounds. On average, 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness during their lifetime. This is why many of our Whole Health Pharmacy owners have felt that mental health is an underserved area that requires more focus from pharmacists.

Why #SickNotWeak?

#SickNotWeak is dedicated to helping people understand that mental illness is a sickness, not a weakness. With his decades-long television career, combined with his decades-long battle with depression and anxiety, Michael Landsberg is uniquely qualified to fight back against the stigma that surrounds mental illness. We strongly support the great work #SickNotWeak is doing and feel this partnership will help us provide better support for patients with mental health needs at the pharmacy level. What is Whole Health Pharmacy Partners doing?

In the latter part of 2016, Whole Health Pharmacy Partners conducted extensive patient and caregiver research with those affected by mental illness. From that, a comprehensive program was developed. The #Here4MentalHealth initiative.

What does the #Here4MentalHealth program consist of?

Pharmacogenomic Testing

We are continually trying to find innovations to help our patients optimize their therapy. That’s why we’re bringing pharmacogenomic testing (the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drug) to patients across the country. We sat down with Michael Landsberg to discuss how this testing can bring someone one step closer to understanding which medications may be better suited for them, based on their genetics.

Mental Health Education Day

This specialized day of training was provided to Whole Health Pharmacy Partners staff and guests on January 15, 2017.

In the morning, Michael Landsberg and the #SickNotWeak team conducted a panel discussion with patients living with a mental illness. The room was packed and the audience was full of tears.

The panelists reminded us how important it is to listen to your patients, support their needs, and most importantly…smile.

With a focus on practical learning, a multidisciplinary team carried on throughout the day, conducting sessions to deepen the capabilities of pharmacy staff to support patient in their respective communities.

The focus of the education day was not just for pharmacists, but for all pharmacy staff who interact with patients who have mental health needs.

Patient Pamphlets

Whole Health Pharmacy Partners conducted research with patients and caregivers affected by a mental illness. From that, handouts were developed and are being distributed to patients within the Whole Health Pharmacy Partners’ network. The contents are inspired and guided by people who truly understand the experience and are being handed out to remind patients that they are not alone. Hence, from “From people who know what it’s like.” If you are interested in downloading these pamphlets, feel free to contact the Whole Health team.

  • Whole Health Pharmacy Partners heard from patients in their research that having a medication tracker would be useful – both for self-management and for health care provider management.

Resource Guide for Mental Health Management Apps

  • In the new era of technology, many patients are interested in how their smart phones can help them through their mental health journey. Whole Health Pharmacy Partners has pulled these resources together in this handy document.

Be sure to follow Whole Health Pharmacy Partners online through Twitter and Facebook as we continue to roll out the #Here4MentalHealth initiative across our pharmacies.

Mental Health Surveys

We surveyed pharmacists and pharmacy students both at the BC Pharmacy Association conference and the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association conference. What we learned was interesting and surprising! Recognizing and supporting the mental well-being of ourselves and our staff are important considerations we continue to look after our patients.

Mental Health Awareness Video

We are committed to letting patients and caregivers know that their pharmacist is an excellent resource when it comes to their mental health needs.

That’s why we’ve created this animated video. It talks about one of the most common mental health conditions: Anxiety Disorder. Our goal is to educate the public and provide support to those whose lives are affected by mental illness. Feel free to share this video with those who may benefit.
